Viofo A129 Duo Dual Dashcam Review

Viofo is a Chinese dashcam manufacturer that had great success with their A-line dashcams and last year they have released the A129 Duo, a relatively low-cost dual-channel dashcam. That brought to the market one of the affordable dual-channel setups to offer superior 1080p day and night video from both the front and rear cameras.

Design and Features

back cam
capable of capturing 1080p video at 30 frames per second

Both cameras in the A129 Duo system use an IMX291 Sony STARVIS sensor, which is capable of capturing 1080p video at 30 frames per second.
They use a popular form factor for dashboard cameras, as it makes for a stealthy and unobtrusive design. Yes, its not particularly fancy but it covers the basics better than any budget dual-channel system on the market.

The Build quality is good and there are five buttons, lined up in a row: Menu, Record, Lock File (a bit larger than the others), followed by Mute, and Picture-In-Picture (PIP) keys. Three LEDs indicate recording, Wi-Fi, and microphone statuses.
The ports on the front camera are two mini-USB types, one for power and the other to connect with the rear camera; a 3.5 mm jack for the AV output; an SD card slot; and a tiny recessed reset button.
The rear camera has only the mini-USB port to connect with the front camera.

The buttons and on-screen menus are easy enough to learn and use.
Both of the dashcams are attached straight to the windshield using the mount with the 3m double side tape.
Like many other dashcams on the market, the A129 Duo also supports Wi-Fi, which you can use to connect to and share videos via your phone using the Viofo app.

Optional

Viofo offers a polarizing filter( CPL – Circular Polarizing Lens) that can be used to reduce reflections and glance for the window and road surfaces that can affect the image quality, same principle as a polarized sun-glasses

Another optimal add on is the external GPS – The external GPS module can be used to record speed and route data and could be viewed on the app later on.

Bluetooth remote control – With the Bluetooth remote control you can record impotent events without needing to take your eyes off the road

Setup

Setting up the A129 Duo was easy enough, basically like any other dashcam. For the power source, I have used the USB cable that was provided and the Dual USB car adapter. I could not use the 24H surveillance as I didn’t have the hardwiring kit(it’s optional)

Performance

The video quality during the day was very good. Cars and landmarks are easily visible and are quite clear. I have no complaints about the video quality during the day.

The A129 Duo uses a supercapacitor. Unlike with some cameras on the market, it’s large enough to power recordings for a couple of seconds after the 12-volt is pulled or fails.

The night video is quite good and reveals lots of detail with the low lighting.
