Hohem iSteady Mobile Plus 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal Review

Most people using their phones to take pictures or to shoot different types of videos. Our phones are a means to document everything we are experiencing in our lives. As technology is involving we strive to improve our phones by using different accessories, like selfie sticks, clip-on lenses, and other gadgets that improve our shoots. Holding your phone steady is quite hard and even selfie sticks, don’t help with stabilization, they just hold the phone at a static angle. That’s where products like the Hohem iSteady Mobile Plus 3-Axis smartphone gimbal comes to the rescue.

What’s in the Box?

Design and features

The iSteady Mobile Plus gimbal design is similar to all the gimbals on the market. It comes in black and doesn’t feel cheap in your hands. It is about 11.75 inches long and weighs 495g( without your phone) and the max payload is 280g. Thanks to the provided Foam-lined hard carrying case you are able to take it anywhere with comfort. If you are not planning on using the case, although the iSteady is compact, it’s not an accessory that’s going to fit in your pocket because let’s face it, it’s not very small.

The handle of the iSteady has a rubber surface that helps with better gripping. On the front( facing us when we hold the gimble) are located most of the controls. The power button that doubles as the capture and video record/stop button, a mode button, a zoom slider button, and a joystick button that moves the phone holder up, down, left, and right.

On top of the handle, there are two LEDs that show the status of Bluetooth and the gimbal mode.

On one side of the gimble, there are battery status LEDs that indicate the amount of charging we currently have. On the backside of the handle, we have a trigger that centers the phone when pressed.

On the left side, we have a micro USB port that is used to charge iSteady’s internal battery. Another cool feature is this gimble can be used as a power back, there’s a USB-A port on the side of the handle that is we can use to charge other devices. Thanks to a 3600mAh battery, the ISteady’s internal battery has 12 working hours and will require 3.5 hours to fully charge its batteries.

Another useful feature is 3 standard-sized threaded tripod mounts. Yes, you can mount on the gimble on 3 different places, one is on the bottom of the handle, one is on the side of the handle, and one is on the phone holder.

How to Start Using iSteady

In order to start using the iSteady gimble, you first need to put your phone in the holder and then balance it using the adjustable holder. Afterward, press the power button and you are ready to shoot stable video. You might need to calibrate the gimble, if that’s the case, just follow the instructions on the app or the user manual. Getting the iSteady ready to use takes enough time that you probably won’t be able to use it to capture spur of the moment footage.

Like most gimbles, you should never turn them on without the smartphone mounted. If you wondering what will happen, the gimble will go crazy.

Using Hohem App

If you’re going to use the Hohem app, you will experience special features like face tracking, the image capture/video capture button on the handle, and the zoom/focus switch and could take very neat panorama shots. Don’t worry, anyone who doesn’t plan on using the dedicated app can s use their phone apps or any other image/video capture app with the steady.

Another cool feature is the following feature that follows a person by tracking his face. Although is a very feature, It didn’t work all the time and it was a problematic feature to use.

If you are looking for a higher-end gimble you are welcome to check my review of FeiyuTech G6 Plus Gimbal.
